Sony apologises to church over game

Entertainment giant Sony has apologised to Manchester Cathedral for using its interior in a violent computer game without permission.

A spokesman for the cathedral revealed its Dean received a letter from the company saying it "was not our intention to cause offence".

"If we have done so, we sincerely apologise," it added.

Photo-realistic images of the interior of the cathedral featured in bloody computer game Resistance: Fall of Man.

In response the Dean of Manchester Cathedral, The Very Reverend Rogers Govender, said: "We acknowledge the admission by Sony that the building in the game is Manchester Cathedral.

"We thank Sony for the apology they have made.

"However, we do not move from the position that we are against violence and especially the gun violence seen in this portrayal of the Cathedral."

Mr Govender has described using Manchester Cathedral as a backdrop for the blood-thirsty game as "highly irresponsible".

The Church feels the use of Manchester as a setting for the shoot-out game is particularly inappropriate because of the city's history of gun violence.

Sony said it did not accept that argument. In the letter, the company said: "We do not accept that there is any connection between contemporary issues in 21st century Manchester and the work of science fiction in which a fictitious 1950s Britain is under attack by aliens. We believe a comprehensive viewing of the work will make its content and context clear."
