The region was the most popular area of the country for people to relocate to between 1996 and 2006, according to Britain's biggest mortgage lender Halifax but the South East also had the second highest level of people leaving it for other areas of the UK.
This left it with a net gain of 384,000 people from internal migration, the second biggest jump in the UK.
The South West topped the table, with 440,000 more people moving to the region during the period than left it, increasing its population by 9%.
But a preference for people to leave urban areas for rural ones and coastal towns saw 2.4 million people move away from London in the past 10 years, leaving the capital facing a net loss of 608,000 people due to internal migration, although London's population still increased during the period due to around 1 million people arriving from abroad.
The only other region that saw a net fall in its population as a result of people moving to other regions of the UK was Northern Ireland, where 4,000 more people left the area than moved to it during the 10 year period.
This helped to boost the capital's population by 538,000 in the 10 years to 2006.
The North East was the only region that saw its population decline during the period, with it falling by 20,000 during the decade.
The South East saw the second biggest population increase at 438,000, followed by the South West at 331,000.
Halifax said population changes were helping to drive housing demand, with the rise in population due to internal migration in the South West a "significant factor" behind the rapid rise in house prices the region has seen during the past 10 years, with the average cost of a home soaring by 206%.
