Mr Martin will try to justify allowing police to carry out the search, which many across the parties regard as a breach of the shadow immigration minister's parliamentary privilege.

With the escalating row threatening to overshadow the Queen's Speech, senior Conservatives backbenchers are expected to lead demands for a full debate following his statement to the House.

However, aides suggested Mr Martin will seek to restrict questions to short points of order.

A number of Tories are considering the "nuclear option" of tabling a motion of no confidence in the Speaker - which could potentially pave the way for his removal.

Harwich MP Douglas Carswell said he was not alone in thinking Mr Martin was "not up to the job".

Another Tory backbencher, Richard Bacon, added: "If the Speaker cannot or will not uphold the Authority of his Office and defend the rights of MPs then there is no point in his carrying on as Speaker."

The Liberal Democrats are also expected to push for a full examination of events, with leader Nick Clegg warning that letting the incident pass would put parliament on a "slippery slope".
