Sport Relief weekend tops £20m mark

The Sport Relief appeal raised more than £20 million for good causes, it has been announced.

Thousands of people braved the cold and the wet to take part in more than 200 one-mile fun runs across the country this weekend.

Sports stars and celebrities including Dame Kelly Holmes, Frank Bruno and Connie Fisher were among the runners who helped the appeal reach its highest ever total.

On Friday an anonymous donor gave £5.5 million to the campaign.

Kristina Kyriacou, spokeswoman for Comic Relief, which organises Sport Relief, said she was "elated" by the final total, and thanked everyone who took part.

"No matter what they've done, no matter how big or small the donation or how far they've walked or run, they have helped to change the life of a vulnerable person in the UK or abroad," she said. "Just by doing sport they have done good."

In the run up to this weekend's runs, famous faces completed a series of challenges to help raise money.

Former England footballer Alan Shearer and television presenter Adrian Chiles cycled 335 miles from Newcastle to London, while rower James Cracknell travelled from the UK to Africa "under his own steam" - completing the journey by swimming from Gibraltar to Morocco.

Sport Relief will spend the £20,787,375 it raised on a range of projects aimed at helping vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the UK and around the world.
