Staff to protest over DVLA closures

Transport staff will hold protests across the UK this week over plans to close dozens of Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency offices.

Members of the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) will stage demonstrations on Tuesday, warning that up to 1,200 jobs were at risk if local and enforcement offices in England, Wales and Scotland close.

The closures would wipe out face-to-face services these offices provided to the public and motor traders, said the union.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: "We will not sit back and watch while jobs and highly-prized public services are stripped away. Our local economies are crying out for support and investment, not more cuts.

"The closure plans are not based on what the people who use these services say they want and need, but on a politically motivated desire to unpick our public services."
