Angela Gordon, who was charged with the murder Khyra Ishaq on Wednesday, spoke just twice during a 20-minute hearing at Birmingham Crown Court.
Her partner, Junaid Abuhamza, has also been charged with Khyra's murder, but was not required to appear in court after being judged to be unfit to attend the hearing.
Gordon, 33, and Abuhamza, 29, are also accused of "causing or allowing" the death of Khyra, who died after paramedics were called to her family home in Leyton Road, Handsworth, Birmingham, in the early hours of May 17.
The Recorder of Birmingham, Judge Frank Chapman, ordered both defendants, who also face separate charges of cruelty, to reappear at the city's Crown Court on November 4 for a plea and case management hearing.
Gordon, who appeared via videolink from HMP Eastwood Park in Gloucestershire wearing a black robe and head covering, was remanded in custody.
She will next appear alongside Abuhamza, who also lived at Leyton Road, at Birmingham Magistrates' Court next Wednesday.
The hearing at the lower court is necessary to allow the murder charges to be formally transferred to the Crown Court.
