A 70mph gust was measured at Mumbles near Swansea at 4am and ships have reported winds up to 80mph close to the Scilly Isles, off Cornwall.
Paul Mott, meteorologist at MeteoGroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association, said winds were expected to start picking up around 6am in Cornwall and western Devon.
"It will remain gusty until about 6pm (on Sunday) so a good 12 hours of gales," he said. "With the winds staying that strong for so long, they will be quite damaging in places, certainly enough to bring trees down."
He added: "There will be heavy showers across the South West and Wales this morning with localised thunderstorms. Not enough for widespread flooding but there may be localised flooding."
The Met Office has issued warnings of severe gales for Wales and south-west England. Snow is expected to fall on the Pennines and further north in Scotland with Wales also receiving a flurry before the snow turns back into rain.
The Environment Agency has 17 flood warnings in place, with a further 101 flood watches.
There were 13 flood warnings in the South West, three in Wales and one in the Midlands, with 32 flood watches in the South West, 22 in the Midlands, eight in the Southern area, eight in the Thames area, five in the East Anglian area, three in the North West, two in the North East and 21 in Wales.
The severe weather has caused chaos across south Wales with mudslides forcing homes to be evacuated and floods closing roads and causing numerous collisions.
South Wales Police are urging the public to remain at home and avoid driving wherever possible.
