Student murder case ruling delayed

An Italian judge has postponed a ruling on whether three people held over the murder of British student Meredith Kercher should continue to be held in jail.

Judge Claudia Matteini said she would decide on Friday whether Amanda Marie Knox, a 20-year-old student from Seattle, should remain in jail pending further investigation into the death, Knox's lawyer, Luciano Ghirga, said outside court.

The judge was still deciding whether to continue to hold Knox's Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, 24, and a Congolese resident, Lumumba Patrick Diya, 38.

All three were held on Tuesday accused of the murder and sexual assault of 21-year-old Ms Kercher, from Coulsdon, south London.

She was found on Friday in the apartment in Perugia she shared with Knox having been stabbed in the neck.

Mr Ghirga said Knox denied all charges. "We maintain her innocence, and the prosecutor maintains she contributed to the crime," he said.
