Michael Alexander Jones, 18, was found with horrific head injuries in the quiet Victorian terraced flat he shared with his mother Kathleen in Edmonton, north London.
Detectives say they have no apparent motive for the attack on Michael, a first-year geography student at Queen Mary, University of London.
Kathleen Kirby-Jones, a PA, raised the alarm on Thursday after returning from work to her home in Stanley Road, Edmonton.
She was understood to be staying with relatives as police continued to examine her upstairs flat with her son's body still at the scene.
Detective Chief Inspector John MacDonald, who is leading the inquiry, described Michael as a "hard-working lad" who did not appear to have ever been in any trouble.
"We've got no reason to understand why anyone would have inflicted this amount of violence upon him," he said.
He said there was some indication that restraint had been used on Michael but would not comment further.
A Scotland Yard spokeswoman added: "The victim had incredibly serious head injuries with evidence of a knife being used."
Police had cordoned off Stanley Road while forensic teams worked at the scene.
