Suffolk killer 'suicide' claims

Prostitute killer Steve Wright will find a way to commit suicide if his appeal bid fails, his brother said.

The 50-year-old was told he would never be freed after murdering five women who worked in the red light district of Ipswich, Suffolk.

But his brother, David, 51, said the former QE2 steward would end his life if his hopes of a retrial were dashed.

"If the application fails, he won't do much time. I'm pretty sure he would do the deed," said Mr Wright, who lives near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. "He won't do life in prison. He loves his Kentucky, his Chinese takeaways and his pint of beer. He loves his golf. If all of a sudden there's nothing, he won't last long."

Mr Wright drew comparisons between his brother's situation and that of killer doctor Harold Shipman, who was found hanging in his prison cell in 2004.

"Shipman was on suicide watch and he did it," said Mr Wright. "Steve would find a way. He's tried to commit suicide three times before (he was jailed). You can't watch anyone 24 hours a day."

The bodies of Wright's victims were found at remote locations around Ipswich over a 10-day period in December 2006.

Wright, who lived in the town's red light district, was convicted after DNA and fibres linked to his clothes, house and car were found on the women.

Wright's appeal bid is set to be considered early next year by a panel of three judges at the Royal Courts of Justice, in London.

Mr Wright said his brother is hoping to quash his conviction on the basis that he was badly advised by his legal team, the trial should not have been held in Ipswich and the prosecution case was poorly challenged.
