Supermarket milk contamination fear

A leading supermarket chain has recalled a batch of its semi-skimmed milk amid fears it may be tainted with cleaning solution.

Waitrose said its 1.136 litre (2pt) cartons of Essential Waitrose semi-skimmed milk which was marked "Display until 01 Nov/Use By 02 Nov" were affected.

It warned the product should not be used or drunk and should be returned to a local branch of Waitrose for a full refund.

Cheryl White, head of food technology for Waitrose, said: "During a production run, some of cartons of semi-skimmed milk were accidentally tainted with a very dilute cleaning solution.

"A small number of customers have reported an unpleasant odour and taste and, as a precaution, we have taken the decision to withdraw the whole production batch.

"This shouldn't have happened and we are very sorry to customers for the inconvenience."
