Tarrant quizzed in assault probe

TV star Chris Tarrant has been arrested on suspicion of assault at a restaurant.

The host of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? was questioned after a man dialled 999 and claimed he was injured in an attack at an Indian restaurant in Nottingham.

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that a 60-year-old man was arrested shortly after 10pm on Sunday and later released on bail.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman said: "Shortly after 10pm on Sunday a 999 call was made from a man claiming to have been injured following an incident with another diner at the MemSaab Restaurant in Maid Marian Way, Nottingham.

"Police officers attended and a short time afterwards a 60-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and taken into custody for questioning. The man has been bailed to a date in June pending further inquiries."

A spokesman for Tarrant said the man claimed he was cut on the arm by a piece of cutlery thrown at him by the star.

He said Tarrant was "shocked, confused and totally bemused" and denies any involvement in an assault.

He said the first the TV personality knew of the claim was when four police officers arrived at his hotel and arrested him.

"He is shocked, confused and totally bemused. He just does not understand what is going on here. He is flabbergasted," the spokesman said.

The claim was made after Tarrant dined at the MemSaab restaurant with his producer and scriptwriter following three days of filming a show for disabled children.
