Technical problems delay trial

The trial of three men accused of helping the July 7 bombers to reconnoitre possible targets failed to start after a series of technical hitches.

Waheed Ali, 24, Sadeer Saleem, 27, Mohammed Shakil, 31, all deny one charge of conspiring with Mohammed Saddique Khan, Shehzad Tanweer, Jermain Lindsay, Hasib Hussain and others unknown to cause explosions between November 17 2004 and July 8 2005 .

The four suicide bombers murdered 52 people when they set off bombs on the capital's transport network in 2005. The defendants in this case are accused of helping them check out potential locations to attack.

A live link-up with a room being used to accommodate members of public with an interest in the case broke down shortly before the case was due to start. The room is in a location in central London.

Mr Justice Gross apologised to the jurors for the delay and sent them home.

He said: "I'm terribly sorry at the waste of your time. There is a remote link because there is interest in this case which can't be accommodated in court. The technology has failed and we have been trying to explore how to go ahead.

"I do apologise - it must be very frustrating. It's not the fault of anyone here, that may be some comfort. We are working on it."

Neil Flewitt QC is expected to open the Crown's case against the defendants to the jury at Kingston Crown Court, south west London on Thursday.

All three men deny conspiring unlawfully and maliciously to cause by explosive substance an explosion likely to endanger lives or cause serious injury to persons or damage property in the UK.
