Kasha Peniston pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his sister Kamilah by shooting her in the forehead with a .38 snub-nosed revolver.
The gun was being kept by the boy's mother and had been buried in the back garden of the family council house in Gorton, Manchester. The boy was playing with the gun when it went off, killing his sister Kamilah.
Kasha, appearing at Manchester Crown Court, did not intend any ill will towards his sister, the court heard. He did not intend to fire the powerful handgun and it was simply "a terrible tragedy and terrible accident", Mr Justice Holland told the court.
The youngster's mother Natasha, 33, was away in London to attend a funeral. She had told him not to touch the firearm.
Instead the boy got hold of the gun inside the house. He had the gun in his pocket while he was in the living room and his sister was lying on the sofa.
The gun went off, with the bullet hitting Kamilah in the forehead. Panicking, he carried her outside, shouting: "Call an ambulance! I've shot my sister!"
Kamilah underwent emergency surgery but died in hospital hours after the shooting, which happened at around 7.30pm on April 30.
On Tuesday her brother stood in the dock wearing a T-shirt bearing a portrait of his sister with the words RIP Kamilah 1994-2007.
His mother has already pleaded guilty to possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. How she came across the gun has not yet been explained in court. Kasha has been remanded in local authority care and his mother is on bail. Both will be sentenced at a later date.
