The boy, named locally as Ashley Horton, was stabbed in the leg at an address in Birmingham on Thursday. He later died in hospital.
A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being question by police.
A teenage friend of Ashley's said: "He had a fight the day before. He owed them a tenner - they stabbed him for a tenner."
The scene of the stabbing in Tern Grove, Hawkesley, Birmingham, has been cordoned off by police and a large white forensic tent was erected in the garden. Several floral tributes have been placed against the burnt garden fence.
Separately, police are investigating the deaths of two teenage schoolboys stabbed to death in unconnected street attacks.
Amro Elbadawi, 14, died from stab wound after he was knifed in Queen's Park, west London, at about 5.15pm on Thursday.
Less than seven hours earlier, Devoe Roach, 17, of Stoke Newington, died after apparently being stabbed in the chest in Stamford Hill, north London.
Scotland Yard said Commissioner Sir Ian Blair was being kept up to date with the latest developments in the murder inquiries.
The deaths brought the grim toll of teenage murders in the capital so far this year to 11. A total of 26 teenagers were killed last year.
