Two men were arrested and taken into custody for questioning after the 19-year-old was killed in an east London street on Saturday.
The victim suffered fatal wounds after an altercation with a group of men.
A second teenager, aged 17, also suffered stab wounds in the incident in the early hours of Saturday morning in High Road, Ilford. He was taken to an east London hospital, but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
Two men, both aged in their 20s, were arrested nearby and taken to separate east London police stations.
Police said they were awaiting formal identification and the results of a post mortem examination before releasing his name.
Detectives were also examining a knife found after the stabbing. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "A weapon has been recovered but it is too early to say if it is the murder weapon."
Officers were called to High Road at the junction with Clements Road at 2.30am. The murdered teenager was pronounced dead at the scene, outside shops in Ilford High Road, at 3.38am.
A large area including shops near the scene such as Boots and Shoe Zone was cordoned off. Police officers and forensic teams were out on the streets searching in bins and on the ground.
Det Ch Insp John MacDonald from Scotland Yard's homicide and serious crime command said: "I am appealing for anyone who may have been in the Ilford High Road or Clements Road area to come forward and contact police."
