Sean McSkimmings, 17, of Gaitskell Avenue, Alexandria, was one of a group of youngsters who were leaping off Balloch Bridge on the River Leven, Dunbartonshire, on Friday evening.
But after one plunge the youth, who could not swim, failed to appear.
Several people went the river to try to find the boy, but without success.
The emergency services were called after the incident, which took place at 8.15pm, and launched a rescue bid for the teenager.
An RAF helicopter and a rescue boat from the village of Luss joined in the search.
Police divers were also called in and recovered the body of the teenager shortly before midnight.
Strathclyde Police said that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and that a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.
The force also warned people not to play or swim in open water when there are no lifeguards present, as many lochs and rivers have strong currents and can be dangerous.
