Teenager held over stab death

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested over the fatal stabbing of a teenager.

Police said the boy is being held on suspicion of murdering Conor Black in Harpurhey, Manchester, in the early hours of Saturday.

The arrest comes after the family of Nilanthan Moorthy, 17, paid tribute to him after he was stabbed to death in Croydon, south London.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman confirmed the arrest but still urged witnesses to come forward, saying: "Detectives investigating the fatal stabbing of Conor Black in Harpurhey have ... arrested a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of murder.

"Conor was killed on Moston Lane by a single stab wound to his upper left shoulder. Paramedics tried to treat Conor for a puncture wound, but he died on the way to hospital.

"Anyone with any information about Conor's murder is asked to call police on 0161 856 3540 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Conor, a joinery student and budding rapper, was knifed from behind after reportedly attending a rowdy party where he was embroiled in a petty squabble.

The officer leading the inquiry, Detective Superintendent Shaun Donnellan, said the boy would have been defenceless. A hooded figure was seen running from the scene where Conor's body was discovered slumped on grass just feet from a main road.

The arrest comes just 24 hours after detectives launched a murder investigation in the tough Manchester suburb.

A memorial to Conor - who was known to police - continued to grow not far from the crime scene. Floral tributes and cards were left at a tree along with teddy bears, cards and a football.
