Teenager jailed for shooting sister

31 January 2007
Kasha Peniston, 17, was playing with the .38 snub-nosed revolver with sister Kamilah and her eight-year-old twin sisters, watching TV and eating snacks at the family home in Gorton, Manchester.
The boy, then aged 16, had the gun in "very close proximity" to Kamilah's face when the weapon was fired.
The single bullet hit the girl in the forehead as she lay on the settee. Kamilah, aged 12, died in hospital the next day with her mother Natasha, 33, at her bedside.
Natasha Peniston, who had been hiding the gun at their home, was jailed for three years at the same hearing as her son at Manchester Crown Court.
Kasha had pleaded guilty to his sister's manslaughter at an earlier hearing.
His mother admitted possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
Relatives gasped and wept as mother and son were both jailed and led down from the dock.
The court heard Natasha Peniston had been "prevailed upon" by a boyfriend, a serious criminal, to look after the gun.
She had since made a statement to police identifying him. He is expected to be arrested, the court heard. The boyfriend cannot be named for legal reasons.
