Teenager killed crossing motorway

A teenager has died after he was hit by a vehicle as he tried to cross the M60 motorway, police said.

It is believed the 16-year-old was a part of a group who were outside a nearby bowling complex when police were called to a disturbance.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said officers were called to the Hollywood Bowl complex, at Lord Sheldon Way, Ashton-under-Lyne, at around 7pm on Saturday.

When they arrived, four youths were there. Three ran out of sight and it is believed they crossed open land and went onto the embankment of the nearby M60 motorway.

The fourth was stopped nearby by police and was taken home to his parents.

Witnesses said two teenagers were seen successfully crossing both carriageways of the M60 but a third was hit by a vehicle as he tried to cross the anti-clockwise carriageway near junction 23.

A police spokesman said he suffered multiple injuries and died at the scene.

The incident has been reported to Greater Manchester Police's internal affairs branch who have referred it to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The motorway was closed in both directions for several hours but has since reopened.
