Teenager killed in police crash

A teenage girl has died after being in collision with a police car, police have said.

The 16-year-old was struck by the marked patrol car at 11.20pm on Monday night in Denton Road, Newcastle.

Northumbria Police said paramedics pronounced the girl, who has not been named, dead at the scene.

The force has not said whether the car was responding to an emergency.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been informed.

Assistant Chief Constable Sue Sim said: "An investigation is now under way into all the circumstances leading to this crash.

"The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission and the IPCC are carrying out an assessment at the scene.

"We would appeal for people in the area to remain calm to allow for a full investigation into this incident.

"This is a tragedy and our thoughts are with the family as this time."
