Teenager remanded over Rhys murder

A teenager accused of the murder of schoolboy Rhys Jones has appeared in court and was remanded until May 23.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Liverpool Youth Court and will appear in a month's time for a committal hearing.

The youth, who wore a grey T-shirt and appeared from a young offenders' institution by video link, spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

Rhys's parents Stephen, 45, and Melanie, 42, sat in court with two family liaison officers and listened to the proceedings.

Mrs Jones, who cradled her son as he bled to death last August after being shot through the neck, wore a gold pendant showing Rhys's picture.

She and her husband also wore purple Unite ribbons - an anti-gun campaign launched in Rhys's memory.

The alleged killer was unaccompanied in court except for two members of Liverpool's youth offending team and his solicitor James Benson.

Also appearing were a 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named, and two men who were remanded to appear by video link at Liverpool Magistrates Court on May 23.

The boy, Gary Kays, 25, of Mallard Close, and Melvin Coy, 24, of Abbeyfield Drive, both West Derby, Liverpool, spoke only to confirm their names, addresses and ages.
