The youth died following an altercation on a petrol station forecourt in Salford, Greater Manchester.
Officers were called to the scene and found the teenager sitting on the pavement nearby with a single stab wound to the abdomen. He was taken to Hope Hospital where he died a short time later.
It is believed there were a number of young people and teenagers in the area around the time of the incident at the Texaco petrol station in New Lane, Winton, shortly after 11pm on Friday.
One witness said she saw two youths fighting outside her home in New Lane while a gang of up to 10 others wearing grey clothing and hooded tops surrounded the pair.
Hilda Dinsdale, 63, of New Lane, saw one youth fall to the ground and the gang then ran off in the direction of the petrol station. The injured youngster followed them a short time later, she added.
A post-mortem examination is expected to take place later. The victim, who is white, has not yet been formally identified.
Detectives want to speak to a white man aged 18-20, between 5ft 6in and 5ft 10in, with a slim build, clean shaven, short dark hair and wearing a grey top and black trousers.
Chief Superintendent Kevin Mulligan, Salford Divisional Commander, said: "This is a tragic incident in which a young man has lost his life. I want to reassure the people of Winton that we have a dedicated team of detectives working to catch whoever is responsible for this.
"We also have uniformed officers at the scene to provide a reassuring presence for people in the community. They will remain there for the rest of the weekend. Fatalities like this are rare in Salford, however, one death is one too many. Today a family is mourning the loss of a young life and we are doing our utmost to find whoever did this."
