Teenagers bailed over boy's death

Fourteen teenagers held over the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old boy in a street fight have been bailed.

The teenager, named in reports as Ben Hitchcock, was stabbed to death in Beckenham, south London, shortly before midnight on Saturday.

The youngsters arrested in connection with the incident are in their mid teens.

Police were called to reports of a gang fight in Southend Road, where they found the boy suffering from serious injuries.

He was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The spokesman said officers believed they knew the identity of the dead youth but would not name him until he had been formally identified and all next of kin had been informed.

A post-mortem examination has yet to be arranged.

A spokesman declined to comment on a report that the victim was battered to the ground with poles and broken bottles before having his head stamped on, then was punched towards spiked railings on which he fell.

The head teacher at Ben's school, Kelsey Park Sports College in Beckenham, said Ben had left recently after finishing GCSEs.

The school had expected Ben to go on to further studies at nearby Bromley College.
