Temperatures soar for Easter break

Temperatures have soared to levels way above average for this time of year, as millions enjoy their Easter break.

The usual temperature is around 12C (53.6F), a forecaster for MeteoGroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association said.

But the unseasonal burst of sunshine over the weekend and Easter Monday will see the heat reach 19C (66.2F) and possibly even 20C (68F).

The Easter weekend will generally be slightly cooler than Thursday, which saw thermometers in the seaside resort of Bridlington in the East Riding of Yorkshire, hit just over 20C.

Patchy cloud affecting West Wales, Devon and Cornwall, was giving way to hazy sunshine.

"We will see more 19s and possibly we could see a 20," the forecaster said of the temperature in Celsius. It's way above average in most places."

Northern Scotland will see cloudier weather over the weekend.

"It's going to be increasingly breezy across Scotland," the forecaster added.

A record 2.5 million Britons are spending Easter abroad, with Spain and its islands the most popular destination.

Budget carrier Ryanair reported one million bookings for the holiday period, while easyJet were handling 700,000. The heat could soar to even higher levels in the UK than in continental Europe, with Britons heading overseas possibly enduring rain and cloudy skies.
