Thatcher to unveil memorial

Baroness Thatcher is unveiling a commemorative arch to mark the 25th anniversary of the Falklands conflict.

The former Conservative Prime Minister, who led the country during the 1982 crisis when Argentina invaded the islands, will be in Hampshire for the event.

The metal arch is in the town centre of Fareham, which is close to Portsmouth - the port from which many of the Task Force ships sailed to successfully recapture the islands.

A total of 255 British and about 649 Argentinians lost their lives in the 74-day conflict.

During her visit, Lady Thatcher will also inspect a platoon of Falklands veterans and watch a drumhead service, before a reception with the veterans takes place nearby.

Argentine dictator Leopoldo Galtieri ordered the invasion of the islands at the beginning of April 1982, forcing the then Mrs Thatcher to send a force of 110 ships and 28,000 personnel to retake the colony.

Argentinian forces surrendered in the islands' capital, Port Stanley, on June 14, 1982.

Since then a large British garrison has been stationed in the Falklands to deter any further attacks.

Argentina still lays claim to the islands, which it calls the Malvinas, but in the years after the conflict it has sought a resolution through diplomatic means.
