Thousands call for action on Darfur

Politicians and celebrities also backed calls for civilian protection, in what organisers of the London protest said was their largest and most successful Global Day for Darfur.
A letter to Prime Minister Tony Blair pleading for action was handed in to International Development Minister Gareth Thomas.
More than 200,000 people are estimated to have died in the bloodshed.
Campaigners held red egg timers aloft during a minute's silence and chanted, cheered and clapped during speeches.
The letter read: "Time is running out for the people of Darfur, and we urge you to keep the pressure on the government of Sudan until there is an effective peace-keeping force on the ground protecting civilians.
"Whilst we welcome the efforts that you and your government have taken, there is still an urgent need to do more. We therefore urge you to use your influence to push the international community to call for action."
Darfur survivor Ismael Jarbo, speaking at the protest, said: "Genocide is really going on today, so we really need to do something now today."
He called for the international community to act, possibly with military intervention.
Dr Daud Abdullah, deputy secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said at the event: "It can't continue any longer, there is no justification." Without negotiation, the situation would be "going around in circles", he added.
