The Burning of the Clocks in Brighton, East Sussex, is described as an antidote to the commercial excesses of Christmas and a celebration of daylight hours getting longer.

More than 1,000 people paraded through the resort's streets before ending up on the seafront where the paper and willow lanterns were burnt on a ceremonial bonfire and fireworks lit.

Now in its 15th year, the event - co-ordinated by local community arts group Same Sky - saw the procession accompanied by live music, while the use of paper lanterns represents the passing of time.
