Thousands of smokers aim to quit

31 January 2007
Research suggests the equivalent of every adult in Newcastle, Manchester, Coventry and Bristol will try to give up their habit.
January is the most popular month for quitting, with studies suggesting those who ditch the cigarettes in that month are the most successful. Around one in eight smokers attempted to stop in January 2007.
A new Government advertising campaign is also being launched to remind people of the NHS support on offer.
Public health minister Dawn Primarolo said: "Between January and March 2007, around 130,000 smokers successfully quit with the support of their local NHS stop-smoking service. Many more got help from the NHS smoking helpline, our interactive together programme and nicotine replacement products available on prescription.
"Research has shown that smokers who quit with NHS support are up to four times more likely to succeed.
"Quitting is not easy and it can take some smokers several times to get off cigarettes for good."
A series of "getting off cigarettes" TV adverts will run until March and are intended to remind smokers they are not alone.
Giant cigarettes wander around a city and smokers receive help from different rescue services, each promoting a method of NHS help.
The NHS Smokefree campaign has produced a free DVD called "Get Support", which details the different kinds of free NHS services and features real quitters talking about their experiences. It is available by calling free on 0800 917 6699.
