Three charged over £15m drugs haul

Three men are due to appear in court in connection with the seizure of £15 million of cocaine.

Cumbria Police discovered 140kg of the class A drug after intelligence led its CID officers to stop and search two lorries at the port of Harwich in Essex.

A police spokesman said two men from Preston, Lancashire, and one from Kendal, Cumbria, would appear before South Lakeland magistrates.

Darren Morris, 32, of Preston, Mark Neville, 41, also of Preston, and Peter Hannigan, 49, of Kendal, are accused of importing illegal drugs.

The raid on Saturday morning was the result of a long-running intelligence gathering operation led by Cumbria with assistance by Lancashire Police and HM Customs.

It is understood to be one of the biggest seizures yet made on the UK mainland.

The consignment arrived via Holland and was destined for the streets of Britain, police said.

Detectives are continuing to question a 55-year-old man arrested in Nottingham.
