Three charged with student's murder

Police have charged three teenagers with the murder of a student who went missing on Boxing Day.

Robert Barrington Gill, 17, was last seen by his family on December 26 when he left his brother's house in Shortstown, Bedfordshire.

On Friday, police divers investigating his disappearance recovered a body, thought to be that of the missing student, from the River Ouse.

Sean Downes, 18, of Acacia Road, Bedford, and two co-accused - a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old who have not been named - will appear at Bedford Magistrates' Court charged with his murder.

The trio are also charged with robbery and false imprisonment.

Police believe Robert was in Bedford town centre socialising on Boxing Day night and visited the Pilgrim's Progress pub and possibly other licensed premises before visiting the New York New York night club in St Peters Street.

It is thought he left the club to walk home, possibly along the embankment.

A formal identification and post-mortem examination of the body are due to take place.
