Three die as car crashes into house

A family home had to be demolished after a car ploughed into the property, killing the driver and two passengers.

Derek Campbell, 19, Andrew Morrison, 27, and 35-year-old Anthony Stewart died when their Ford Mondeo careered into the two-storey detached home in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, on Saturday night.

The occupants - a couple and their daughter - escaped unhurt despite the impact of the vehicle ripping a hole in the front wall of the house in Dalton Hill.

The street was sealed off as a demolition team moved in to secure the site. A crane was used to remove the roof of the house and knock down the three remaining walls.

There was no sign of the family, named in newspaper reports as Robert and Margaret Gordon and 20-year-old Stephanie, who are said to be staying with relatives.

Chief Inspector Jim Igoe of Strathclyde Police described how the silver car, being driven from the East Kilbride area, crashed into the house.

Speaking from the scene, he said: "The driver has lost control and it has mounted the pavement.

"It has struck a lamp standard, it has then went onto the verge and become airborne and struck the house. There's no doubt the car has done an awful lot of damage to the house. It has had to be demolished."

Chief Insp Igoe said of the occupants: "The people were actually in their house - it was a couple and their daughter - and they have had a very lucky escape.

"It's a case for them of starting again, but three people have lost their lives. It's a real tragedy".
