A friend of the brothers said the dead man had been arrested earlier in the week when he tried to get back into a property from which he had been evicted.
The men were attacked in an area between Catherine Street and Langdale Street, in Elland, Halifax, West Yorkshire, at about 5pm on Friday.
Three local men, aged 28, 39 and 50, have been arrested and are currently in police custody being questioned by detectives.
West Yorkshire Police were called to the incident on Friday evening and found the two men with knife wounds.
Both were taken to hospital, where the 33-year-old victim was pronounced dead and his 35-year-old brother was said to be in a serious condition.
Police said the men knew each other and it was not believed to be a random attack.
A number of streets have been cordoned off between Catherine Street and Elizabeth Street and uniformed police officers are guarding the area.
At one of the police tapes, a cross had been made from bricks and filled with tealight candles.
Bunches of flowers were laid beside the cross with messages from friends of the victims.
