Two 15-year-old boys and a 20-year-old man have been arrested and are being questioned by West Yorkshire Police in connection with the death of Amar Aslam.
The 17-year-old's body was found in Crow Nest Park, on Sunday night.
A post-mortem examination showed he died as a result of head injuries in the "sustained and brutal" attack, police said.
It is feared Amar may have been the victim of violence between warring gangs of youths who waged running battles in the park.
Police are investigating whether there is a link between the boy's death and the fighting.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the possibility of a link would be investigated.
He could not say whether there had been any violence reported in the park before the young man's death.
Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik said the three arrested men were of Asian background, suggesting that there may not have been a racial motive to the killing.
Mr Malik told BBC Radio 4's PM: "I can confirm that the three men who are in custody are actually all Asian, which means that the race motive perhaps is not one that might be the cause of the death."
