Toddler 'stable' after store plunge

The condition of a three-year-old girl who plunged 100ft down a gap between two escalators at a city centre clothes store has improved, police said.

The youngster was described as "stable but poorly" after previously being "critical" after the fall at Primark in Liverpool.

She was initially treated at the Royal Liverpool Hospital before she was transferred to intensive care at Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

The girl fell from the second floor to the ground floor at the Church Street retail unit at about 1.30pm on Thursday.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "The girl's condition has now been downgraded from critical to stable but poorly. She suffered a broken left leg and left arm which have both been recast and she also received internal injuries."

Detectives were investigating the incident together with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Liverpool City Council.

Crime scene investigators and the HSE carried out forensic examinations of the scene.

on Thursday night, council engineers tested the escalators and cleared them of any mechanical faults.

The store, which at 84,000 sq ft is one of the biggest Primark stores in the UK, has reopened its doors with the escalators in use.

A Primark spokesman said: "The engineers from the council and those from the escalator maintenance firm have given the all-clear for the escalators to operate again. We are continuing to look at the CCTV footage to try and build up a picture of what happened."
