Top doctor warns of jobs 'disaster'

The Government's plans for reforming the failed junior doctors' job application system may not avert another disaster, the head of the British Medical Association has said.

There should be no limit on the number of applications a candidate can make and doctors should not be limited to one interview, Dr Hamish Meldrum said.

Dr Meldrum spoke out after the Government predicted there will be three times as many applicants as places in 2008, compared to twice as many this year.

He said the proposals to prevent a repeat of this year's chaos surrounding the Medical Training Application Service (MTAS) were unsatisfactory.

Any computer system for recruiting doctors in the future must be "tested to destruction", he said.

"There is an absolutely urgent need to set out the timetable for 2008 as soon as possible, otherwise we (the British Medical Association) feel that we are walking into a similar if not worse disaster than this year."
