Support for Labour has slumped 5% over the past month to 28%, according to Populus research for the Times.
Meanwhile, David Cameron's party was backed by 42% - enough to give them a substantial majority if repeated at a general election.
Mr Cameron was also regarded as the best potential Prime Minister to handle the recession and take Britain forward.
The Conservative leader was ahead of Mr Brown by 41% to 32%, compared to last month when the two were level pegging. In November the public favoured the PM on the measure by a margin of 52% to 32%.
The poll suggested the Lib Dems have been benefiting from the crisis, with 18% of those questioned pledging to vote for them.
Other parties, including the Scottish Nationalists, the Greens, the UK Independence Party and the British National Party, have also gained three points to 12%.
Populus interviewed a random sample of 1,504 adults by telephone between February 6 and 8. The results were weighted to represent the UK population.
