Tories maintain lead over Labour

The Tories have sustained a healthy lead in the latest opinion poll - remaining 14 points ahead of Labour, enough for a 102-seat Commons majority.

But there was bad news for Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg as his party was seriously squeezed in a push by both main parties.

The Lib Dems dropped four points to 16% in the ComRes survey for The Independent, while the Conservatives gained four to 44% - their highest in the 18-month history of the poll.

Labour also moved up four to 30% despite the 10p tax rate row blamed for the governing party's disastrous losses in the local elections and the Crewe and Nantwich by-election.

The poll showed Labour's traditional support base had been further eroded, with the Tories ahead by three points among the lowest DE social group and 13 points up among C2 skilled manual workers.

ComRes telephoned 1,006 GB adults between May 30 and June 1 and the data was weighted by past vote recall.
