Tories pick Boris for mayor battle
28 January 2007
The mop-haired MP won the nomination by a landslide, immediately pronouncing that Mr Livingstone's time was up.
In a sign of the clashes to ensue over the coming months, Mr Livingstone quickly hit back that his opponent would be a "shambles" for London.
Mr Johnson also faced renewed hostility from black leaders who complained that he had made a series of "offensive" comments.
In a US-style open primary, the MP for Henley won more than three times as many votes as the other three candidates put together, taking 15,661 out of 20,019 ballots cast.
Promising to be a mayor that "listens, learns and leads", he insisted that Mr Livingstone faced a voter backlash.
"As I visited all of London's 32 boroughs in the last few weeks, the message is loud and clear - King Newt's days are numbered," Mr Johnson said, referring to the Mayor's love of reptiles.
"The job of the mayor is simple - to get people to work on time, to ensure people feel safe on the streets, to help people find a place to call home, to celebrate our diversity and to champion our success. My determination to lead this city is stronger than ever."
Mr Livingstone hit back that only he could build on London's achievements in the years ahead, dismissing his challenger as incompetent.
"London is currently the world's most successful city and requires serious city administration not a shambles."
