Tories pull further ahead in polls

The Conservatives have regained their momentum and extended their lead over Labour, according to a newly published poll.

The YouGov survey for The Daily Telegraph suggests that Gordon Brown's recent resurgence has run out of steam.

Having previously been narrowing the gap between themselves and the Tories, Labour now trails by seven points, up from four in the same poll last month.

It puts the Conservatives on 42% (up two), Labour on 35% (down one) and the Liberal Democrats 14 (unchanged).

The findings will fuel Labour fears that last month's recession-fighting Pre-Budget Report has not gone down as well as Number 10 had hoped, bringing an end to the "Brown bounce".

If they are repeated in other polls, they will also dampen speculation about an early General Election in 2009.

The Prime Minister repeated on Friday that he was concentrating on overcoming the economic difficulties facing the country, saying: "I'm giving no thought to an election."
