Tory plan to rescue failing schools

Hundreds of failing schools could be taken off local authorities' hands under proposals set out by Tory frontbencher Michael Gove.

The shadow schools secretary promised to introduce legislation in the first year of a Conservative government which would allow control to be handed to city academies, charitable trusts and parent co-operatives.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has already warned that more than 600 schools which are failing their pupils will be shut down or taken over.

But Mr Gove suggested that the Tories have run out of patience.

"We will help new schools set up in areas where local authorities have let parents down," Mr Gove told the Daily Telegraph.

"But, in areas where the same party has been in power for too long, and where standards remain poor, we will have the most failing schools transferred to academy sponsors and others who have a proven record of improving education for the poorest.

"We will bring forward legislation to do so in the first Queen's Speech."

Mr Gove was due to expand on his remarks in a speech to the CentreForum think tank.
