Tory poll lead widens again

The Conservatives have raced back into a 15-point opinion poll lead despite voters backing the Government's economic rescue package and feeling more confident about their own finances.

An ICM survey for The Guardian, carried out after Chancellor Alistair Darling delivered his Pre-Budget Report on Monday, saw the Opposition rise three points to 45% with Labour stalled on 30% and the Liberal Democrats down three at 18%.

It will come as a boost to Tory leader David Cameron after several polls appeared to show his advantage slipping and will dampen speculation of a possible spring General Election.

Half of those questioned said they backed Mr Darling's stimulus package (41% opposed) and 46% said he and Prime Minister Gordon Brown were the most trusted with the nation's purse strings to the Tory team's 37%.

The number confident of keeping up with the cost of living also rose 5% from September to hit 50%.

Yet only 22% agreed it was right to pay to boost the economy with higher borrowing and taxes in future - one of the PBR's central messages.

And few (5%) believed the cut in VAT to 15% would encourage them to spend any more, most (74%) saying they would not change their habits and 21% suggesting they might cut purchases.

ICM interviewed a random sample of 1,026 adults by telephone between November 25 and 26 and the results were weighted.
