Tragic honeymoon couple buried

Murdered honeymooners Ben and Catherine Mullany have been buried in a private ceremony just one month after saying their wedding vows.

The couple, from the Swansea Valley, south Wales, were both shot in the head in a suspected bungled robbery at the Cocos Hotel, on the Caribbean island of Antigua on July 27.

Mrs Mullany died instantly, while her husband was flown home and died at Morriston Hospital, Swansea, one week later.

They were buried in a private funeral. It is believed the ceremony took place at St John the Evangelist Church, in Cilybebyll, where they married on July 12.

The couple's parents said in a statement: "A private burial service for our children Ben and Catherine was held.

"It was our wish that the burial was held in private and we thank the media for respecting our privacy."

The family added that plans were being made for a funeral service to allow extended family members, friends and colleagues to pay their respects.

This is expected to take place at the end of August although a date has not yet been set.

More than 30 people have been questioned in connection with the shootings, but Antiguan police have said there are still no clear suspects.

The 350-strong force has no computers, no crime database and only one forensics-trained officer. A total of eight British officers have now flown to Antigua to assist with the investigation.
