Trains run again after gun incident

Train services on one of the country's busiest rail links have resumed after being suspended while police hunted a suspected gunman in the area.

Armed officers, a police helicopter and dogs were searching an industrial area by Hunters Lane in Rugby, Warwickshire, on Wednesday night after a lorry driver reported his vehicle had been fired upon at 6.30pm.

Police said the lorry was damaged but the driver was not injured.

Nobody has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The area is close to the town's railway station and the West Coast Main line, one of the main routes between Birmingham and London.

Movement was halted on the line, leaving passengers - many of whom were travelling back to London from the Labour conference - in limbo for several hours.

A police spokesman said: "To ensure the safety of members of the public and officers carrying out this search and working alongside the railway line, Network Rail assisted by putting a full stop on railway traffic in the vicinity for the duration of the incident."

He added that the weapon used fired heavy duty ball-bearings and had "the potential to cause serious or fatal injury".

A spokesman for London Midland trains said the incident had caused delays between Birmingham and London Euston.

A spokesman for Virgin Trains said trains started to move again on the West Coast Main Line, after police gave the go-ahead at about 11pm on Wednesday night.
