Tributes to 'heroic' shot PC
08 January 2007
Rat-catcher Peter Medlicott, 33, is believed to have shot PC Richard Gray with a .222 calibre rifle he used for pest control before turning the gun on himself. PC Gray had been attending a domestic incident at a flat in Shrewsbury.
Detectives said the weapon used to gun down the police officer was "legally held".
West Mercia Chief Constable Paul West led the tributes to the firearms officer, who had five commendations for bravery.
He said: "All his colleagues, both police officers and police staff, are devastated by his tragic death, particularly those who worked with him on his regular shift at Shrewsbury.
"In Ricky's four years with us his bravery, determination and professionalism as a police officer saw him recognised with a total of five commendations, two from his divisional commander, two from me, and a judge's commendation. In itself, that speaks volumes for the sort of man he was and his dedication and commitment to duty."
Chief Superintendent Guy Rutter, Shropshire Division commander, said: "This is a terrible tragedy which has had a huge effect not just on the force but also on the local community.
"This was an exceptional incident and the police response to it demonstrates the bravery and commitment shown by every police officer.
"On behalf of all officers and police staff from Shropshire Division, I have passed our condolences on to Ricky's wife, Jenny, and other members of his family."
Floral tributes began to pile up at the foot of a tree opposite Medlicott's flat on Monday night.
