Tributes to teen killed by train

Tributes have been paid to a 14-year-old boy who died after he fell on to a railway track and was hit by an oncoming train.

Liam Hilton was described as a "popular boy" who will be "sadly missed by all who knew him".

Liam was killed by a train travelling at 75 mph close to his home in West Hillington, Glasgow.

He is thought to have been with friends, when he fell from a bridge on to the railway line. The train driver said he saw Liam on the track but was unable to stop in time.

He died a short walk from his home, where he lived with his mother Janice, father John and sister Lisa.

An ambulance was called to Penilee Road, 600 yards from the station, but Liam died at the scene.

Frank Corrigan, headteacher at Lourdes Secondary School, where Liam was a pupil, spoke of the "devastation" caused by the teenager's death. "This is a close-knit community and I know everyone connected to the school is devastated to hear this tragic news," he said. "Liam was a very popular boy and he will be very sadly missed by all who knew him."

A neighbour told the Daily Record newspaper he was a popular, fun-loving teenager. "Everyone around here knew him," they said. "He was just the funniest guy you'd ever meet."

British Transport Police said his death is being treated as unexplained as they continue investigating the accident.
