Three people will appear before magistrates charged with the murder of a 23-year-old man with learning difficulties who was severely beaten in a street attack.

The incident happened in Baxter Road, on Sunderland's Town End Farm Estate, around 10.30pm on Thursday and Mr Martin died in the city's Royal Hospital on Saturday morning.

Northumbria Police said a 21-year-old man and two teenagers, one 16 and one 17, would appear at Sunderland Magistrates Court charged with his murder.

Another 17-year-old youth, arrested on suspicion of murder, and a middle-aged woman, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, have been released on police bail.
