Troops killed in Afghanistan named

Two British soldiers killed on the same operation in Afghanistan have been named as Private Joe Whittaker and Sergeant Major Michael Williams.

Sgt Maj Williams died in a firefight with the Taliban, while Pte Whittaker was killed while checking for mines.

The deaths, on Tuesday, happened in separate incidents that were part of the same operation, the MoD said.

Defence Secretary Des Browne said: "I was deeply saddened to hear about the deaths of Company Sergeant Major Michael Williams and Private Joe Whittaker.

"They both died in the most heroic of circumstances - Company Sergeant Major Williams was taking part in a deliberate operation to drive Taliban fighters from the Upper Sangin Valley and Private Whittaker was checking the road for mines to ensure the safety of his comrades.

"At this extremely difficult time, my thoughts are with their family, friends and comrades."

The deaths take to 108 the number of British service personnel who have lost their lives since the start of operations in Afghanistan in November 2001.
