Trust in data leak firms low: Poll

Three quarters of Britons would not trust a company that had suffered a data leak or theft, a poll has found.

And almost eight out of 10 (79%) would warn family and friends not to buy from such organisations.

The poll highlights how customers' trust of a company and its brand can be affected by leakage or theft of personal and confidential data.

It reveals that 91% of people would choose to buy from a company that has not had a data leak or loss, over a company that has.

Almost four in 10 (39%) of respondents went further saying they would not buy again from a company that had lost data, if they could buy the same goods or service elsewhere.

A massive 96% said it was important that companies securely protect their personal data.

The figures, from a YouGov survey carried out for Check Point, an internet security company, follow a spate of data losses.

Last month it was announced that HM Revenue and Customs had lost two computer discs containing the entire child benefit database with details of 25 million people.

It then emerged that two computer discs containing details of more than 7,000 motorists in Northern Ireland had gone astray in the post.

On Wednesday the Leeds Building Society issued a warning to its 1,000-strong workforce to be vigilant after confidential personal details were mislaid when its human resources department was moved during the refurbishment of its head office in Leeds.
