Two brothers admit killing banker

Two brothers have admitted killing a wealthy banker who was repeatedly punched after intervening to stop an attack on a "down and out" in a city centre.

Tom Cowles, 22, and his brother Ben, 21, both of Norwich, admitted the manslaughter of 45-year-old Frank McGarahan during a hearing at Norwich Crown Court.

Both brothers - who are former schoolboy boxers - denied murdering Mr McGarahan, a father-of-two, from Much Hadham, Hertfordshire.

The court heard that Mr McGarahan, who worked for Barclays, died after collapsing following the assault in Norwich at around 3am on September 28 last year.

The court saw CCTV footage of the attack, which showed Mr McGarahan lying lifeless on his back after being attacked at least three times.

Ben Cowles, a pipefitter, also admitted assaulting Robertas Sinkevicius - the man described as being of a "down-and-out" appearance.

He and his brother, a builder, also admitted affray.

Sentencing was adjourned until June 26 and the brothers were remanded back into custody.

Mr McGarahan was chief operating officer of Barclays Wealth, the section of the bank which managed the assets of rich customers.

Prosecutor Mark Dennis QC said Mr McGarahan had been in Norwich for a family christening and was waiting for a taxi after enjoying a night out with his brother, Kevin, and cousin, Sean Ryan, when trouble flared.
